Datadog is an observability service for cloud-scale applications, providing monitoring of servers, databases, tools, and services, through a SaaS-based data analytics platform.
Datadog Application Performance Monitoring (APM) provides end-to-end distributed tracing from frontend devices to databases—with no sampling. By seamlessly correlating distributed traces with frontend and backend data, Datadog APM enables you to monitor service dependencies, reduce latency, and eliminate errors so that your users get the best possible experience.
Datadog Application Performance Monitoring (APM or tracing) is used to collect traces from your backend application code. This beginners' guide shows you how to get your first trace into Datadog. Note: Datadog APM is available for many languages and frameworks. See the documentation on Instrumenting Your Application.
In APM, a transaction trace gives a detailed snapshot of a single transaction in your application. A transaction trace records the available function calls, database calls, and external calls.
A service is a set of processes that do the same job - for example a web framework or database (read more about how services are defined in Getting Started with APM).

About Datadog

Datadog is a very good network and service monitoring service for midsized IT shops. If you can get past the initial setup and the agent-based architecture, it’s got a lot to offer, including loads of integrations, dashboards, and flexible alerts. Datadog is a well-known and popular tool, and the company that produces it is growing rapidly. What is Datadog?

Datadog is a monitoring service for cloud-scale applications, providing monitoring of servers, databases, tools, and services, through a SaaS-based data analytics platform. The Datadog Agent is software that runs on your hosts. It collects events and metrics from hosts and sends them to Datadog, where you can analyze your monitoring and performance data. The Datadog Agent is open-source, and its source code is available on GitHub at DataDog/datadog-agent. All data transmitted between Datadog and Datadog users is protected using Transport Layer Security (TLS) and HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS). If encrypted communication is interrupted the Datadog application is inaccessible.
