What is Prometheus?
Prometheus is an open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit designed for reliability and scalability in modern cloud-native environments. Developed by SoundCloud and now part of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), Prometheus excels in collecting and querying metrics from various services and applications. It uses a time-series database to store metrics data, allowing for efficient retrieval and analysis. Prometheus features a powerful query language called PromQL, which enables users to extract and aggregate metrics for monitoring and visualization. It supports multi-dimensional data collection with a flexible data model and integrates well with other tools in the observability stack, such as Grafana for visualization. Prometheus is particularly well-suited for dynamic and containerized environments, providing insights into system performance and operational health through real-time metrics and alerting capabilities.
